The Do's and Dont's of garbage disposals

We often get calls from individuals that have a problem with their garbage disposals/drains after putting something down it that is not meant for it. The purpose of a garbage disposal is to catch and grind up the small amount of leftovers that get in the sink when you are washing dishes or cooking. Many people believe that a garbage disposal can grind down almost anything put in it, but this is a myth! To keep your drain lines running clear here is a list of do's and dont's for garbage disposals:

  • Periodically run the garbage disposal (even if you don't use it). Be sure to leave cold water running during and a short time before and after it is run.
  • Run the garbage disposal to clear small bits of food that went down after washing dishes.

  • Items that should not go down the garbage disposal:
    • Egg Shells
    • Potato peelings and other types of peels
    • Artichoke and celery stocks
    • Any type of metal
    • Any type of grease or oil
    • Large amounts of ANY type of particulate.

If you follow these tips you will be able to extend the life of your garbage disposal and help it keep running great for you! However, if you run into more problems give us a call and we will come out and give you a hand 310-676-1147

Thank you and we hope that this was informative and useful!
